"Any Complaints?" - Finished

Well, I put his watch in his vest pocket so he's ready for his debut!  I really like this one.  As I mentioned earlier, he's about 16" tall without the base so you can't miss him.  Also, using an old style shirt front instead of the usual neckerchief really takes him in a completely different direction than my normal cowboy figures.  I could have made him a lot more rough and dirty looking but I think a point is reached where such things start to detract from the figure as much as they add to it.  I did put a dribble of tobacco juice on his dicky so that should be enough.

I've used my Turkey Brand flour sack before and as it's always been a crowd pleasure thought I'd do it again.  It's all done freehand with a square tipped brush for the lettering and just a small brush for the turkey.

There are quite a few photos in the associated album so check him out and let me know what you think.  Always appreciate your comments.

  1. He certainly is an impressive piece, both in scope and dimension. I assume you will do several more pieces in a similar size for the show, both to fill the space and to showcase the extreme detail you can put on a figure. I can't come close to the level of detail you do, but I surely can put a lot more on a bigger figure as opposed to a smaller version of the same carving. At this size, there is probablly nohing you can't get on their either with old reliable, or with the paint brush. A really nice carving with wonderful eye appeal, I really like him.

  2. Lynn,
That is alot of detail! And even as a photo, he stands out. Very impressive. Even noticed the rust/blood stain around the hole in the butcher's knife!
And as a quick aside to let you know that what you show us does not fall on deaf ears, my wife had me make her some duck flower planters to sell. I was content to just paint the duck bill, but, she wanted eyes on her ducks. I told her to do it because I was finished. Then I got to thinking about the epoxy you use on the blacks of your figures eyes. Let's just say that she is now all smiles! :)
    Thanks once again. Jim

  3. Thank you for the sensible critique. Me & my neighbor were just preparing to do some research about this. We got a grab a book from our local library but I think I learned more clear from this post. I'm very glad to see such great info being shared freely out there.
