Red Horse II - Underconstruction

Finished up with the carving on this one this morning and have started adding all the details.   Still have to flesh out the pipe but once that's done the carving should be pretty well finished.  After that it's on to the paint table and the real fun.

I made his earrings out of brass rod and the dangling bits are from pounded cooper which will be painted.  The cross on his chest, which represents the four directions, is just two pieces of thin wood overlapped and glued to a 1/8" dowel.  The braids are held in place with 16 penny nails with the heads clipped off and epoxied in place...probably the strongest part of the carving.  I haven't really given much thought to the beading patterns but it won't be long before I get the books out and do a little research.  I did do a Google search for pipe bags and there are some really nice ideas there.

Still no additional photos in the Gallery.  Snapped this one with my phone.

  3. No, the only reason this one is larger is that the pipe bad raises it up. Once I get all the small things done I'll post photos of the piece before I paint it. Thanks for the comments.

  4. This one is going to be just great and I know the artistic painting detail you do will only add to it's excellence. The structure of the base(with the pipe bag) that you've done is most impressive and is something us run-of-the-mill carvers would never have thought of. Your creativeness is always something to see.

  5. I like it a lot, he has real character. The size give you a larger surface to decorate with your painting skills, he should be magnificent.

  6. Lynn I forgot to ask, do you turn your own bases and router the edges, or do you buy them in ready made? I'm making my own but am wanting to find something a bit different maybe another material like stone or aluminium or maybe a mixture of materials!!! Any ideas gratefully received !! Trev

  7. I turn them myself and route the edges with a profile that closely matches the name plates.

  9. Lynn, I'm a new carver and I've been looking over your carvings here on your site. The facial features of your Indian reminds me of my Step-dad-he was half Irish and half Simionle-just give this fella red hair and you will have captured Pop!
