I'm really enjoying this one. I bet you like the one with the cigarette . That's your MO. I like the smiling one. But either one of them are fantastic. Ya know both of them look like Jack. Amazing. Ginny
Both are excellent, but a little hard to compare because they aren't both painted. However, my preference is the one with the toothy smile. I think they both have the same degree of likeness to Mr. Palance. Lynn, He might be a good candidate for another contest. Just a suggestion. Thanks Dwight
I like both of them but lean towards the toothy smile too. Great resemblance to ol' Jack. Going to be a really nice finished piece. Thanks for sharing. Charlie
Thank you so much for doing instruction on a toothy smile!! I have tried and tried to follow the instructions in books to carve teeth, but without luck. I think seeing you do it, and your method, will (with some practice) get me to a toothy smile now. I really appreciate this video. As to the preference of which head to use....it is hard to compare, but I go with the first one (with the cigarette). The smile is good, but I think it is perhaps a bit too small for Jack Palance. I see Jack with a big wide grin and this one is more of a smirk. They are both good, but the first one to me looks more like Jack. BTW, that groove on the upper lip under the nose is named the philtrum (fill-trum). You can thank anatomy class and dissection for that bit of trivia.
It's got to be smiling jack for me, I think it captures more of the caricature ! You made that look so easy can't wait to see him painted, I hope you go for this one it's kind of different and I like that ! I think I might get some lime blanks ( can't get basswood in the UK) and just carve a bunch of heads to see how they evolve , will be good practice. Keep up the good work and thanks for another inspiring video. Trev
Toothy grin is more Jack as illustrated by the caricature pictures, so I vote that one. I hope whichever wins (or you decide on...ha!) you'll show us step by step how you put the features on the carving head you started the video with. Thanx.

ReplyDeleteIf you're look to get the spirit of Jack I think the one with the cigarette captures it best. Good job.
ReplyDeleteSmiling Jack for sure!

I vote for the toothy smile.
ReplyDeleteI think both styles deserve a finish. Two of Jack would be alright. Fine work on both counts as always. I continue to be wowed by your work.
ReplyDeleteI love the one with the cigarette. Especially the darkness around the eyes. I have learned a lot watching these.

ReplyDeleteI must say Lynn, I like the first one you did, you have the mouth right on, but in truth they are both exceptional. fred k
