The Top Hand - Bust

Here's one I did the other day.  It's a good sized piece when compared to the normal busts....standing about 15" with the base.  It's certainly no easier to carve a larger piece but it gives you the opportunity to expand the details a little in both carving and painting.  Most importantly, it raises your piece to a different level than what is normally seen and that's what I'm after.  The hat is the type worn in the northwestern areas of cowboy country.

Just the one photo so far.  Hope you like him and your comments are always welcome.

  1. Big and imposing carving that will surely catch the eye from across the room. You used a whole basswood log on him to get that big...did you run into trouble with tool size carving that large a figure? How did Old Reliable work out on the roughut gien the size of the block you had? I am going to do my first figure out of 4x4 stock soon and am a bit nervous about the challenge of a big figure. Fingers crossed and see how it goes.

  2. With you saying this one is bigger, just how big? It is an outstanding piece. Ginny
