I'm not sure what the title of this one will be but he ought to be a nice piece once painted. I'll add a stampede string to his hat which will fill up that empty space above the neckerchief knot. He stands about 12" tall with the base.

He looks good, and will be better with your trademark paint on him. I thought for an instant when I first saw the hat that it was a bust of Will Rogers, but then looked closer and see the cowboy you carved. Will would make an interesting caricature, and he does have a local connection with your residence. I find his face to be quite interesting, and endearing somehow. I like this guys expression, he looks like he has had a hard day and is just trying to get the kinks out with a relaxing smoke before bed.

I immediately thought of a cattle buyer looking out over the herd coming in from the drive. Something's going on in that head of his - calculating the costs or the amount of leather on the hoof...
Maybe he is a horse buyer for the cavalry looking over a potential herd for new recruits...
Whatever title you come up with, I'm certain that the title, the paint, the expression, the accents - all of it will add up to be greater than the sum of the parts.

Awesome! Lynn, do you make your bases also? If so, do you turn the bases and rout them? I have a mounted router, but have not mastered how to get the perfect routing on the bases. Do you create the round bases as well? I am just curious how to get my bases to look as professional as you do.

Thanks for all the comments. Eric: Yes, I turn my own bases. This one is Red Oak. The lower part I just sawed out on the Band saw and then glued and screwed the two together. Just a simple routed edge is enough to give it a polished look. As I've mentioned before I think bases can sometimes be more important than the carving itself so a lot of thought should be given when mounting your carvings. Thanks for the question!
