Hopefully the dust over at WCI is starting to settle so I think it's safe to go ahead and post the photos of my latest effort. Anyway.......

I think this grim looking character turned out pretty good. He actually looks a lot better in 3D than in the photos as the darkness of the hat hides a lot. I tried something different on the brass buttons by painting a little detail on their surface. You'll have to tell me whether that worked or not. I also added some twisted wire braid on his hat to give a little more color up there. I'm not really sure whether that is accurate or not but it does add a bit to the effect so I'll go with it. I made a new base for him as the other was just a little too large.

ReplyDeleteSeems to me that if you post a video tutorial that it is there for us to use to try new things and permission to use is assumed. If we follow the note you will be bombarded with e-mail requests and your carving time will be diminished. I'll venture that there will be hundreds of folks making spurs and according to your rule, we need permission.
Looks like a good thing may be coming to an end.

ReplyDeleteI had no idea prior to this about the other things and thought it was okay to use them also. I had not used them, but there are some things I really would like to attempt, so when that time comes you will get a request.

I don't know for sure,but I feel like I might have been the one that started the ruffled feathers. I didn't mean to as I thought it was okay to use them too. I have not copyed any of your carving, but sure is a few I would like to try. I'll never be as good a carver as you are,but I'm trying. I will ask first. thanks for showing how to do this.

ReplyDeleteWhen asked to post the busts body without the head I didn't do it for the very reason you suggested in your comment. I don't mind showing my pieces before and after I paint them as I think thats of great interest to other carvers. Bronze sculptors show the clay version of their pieces prior to the casting so there's really no difference. Painters show the original sketches before the painting....same thing.
ReplyDeleteI'm not demanding that people not copy my work...I'm only requesting that they not do it. It's really up to them as they are the ones who have to make the choice of whether it would be the right thing to do.
As for my collectors they visit my blog to to see what I'm up to and to get the full view of any piece they might be interested in. They seem to like that option. So if they like it and other carvers also appreciate seeing a piece from all angles before and after being painted I think I have the winning argument.
I think the button detail is outstanding!
