Sgt. Buffalo

Here's the latest one.  Turned out great.  Really like the color and believe it or not there are about 6 different colors on that face!  I tried something new on this one.  Instead of trying to carve the characteristics of a Black's hair I used some model railroad ballast glued on with acrylic medium and then painted with a light wash of black.  Perfect!  I didn't apply it to his eyebrows though.  I added the glasses as a Sgt. in the army at that time would have been along in years and those little extras really bring a figure to life.

  1. A great looking bust. I really like the clasps on the suspenders...I just might have to try that on a carving. I was wondering why you either didn't paint the hat, or made it such a light color. I thought all the old cavalry hats were black or dark blue? He is very stunning, and a feast for the eyes. congrats.

  2. Truly a Classic. And that hair concoction you applied really makes for an added detail. Carved or no, it's very admirable in total.

  3. Awed and Re-Awed!

I've got a curiosity question Lynn: Did hats like this figure is wearing use pins to hold the front brim to the crown? Were they sown or stapled somehow?

I suspect some might believe I was around back then and should know this, but he predates my time a little...

    Thanks!

  4. I think they were just blown that way over time. I think Ben Johnson's was similar in the movie Fort Apache. Here's a link that shows something http://www.buffalosoldiersmc.net/images/BuffaloSoldiers_9thCavalry.jpg

I knew your carving would be accurate and that you would have just such an answer.

  7. A wonderful job Lynn. Your colors look so much richer on this carving as others you have done, I wonder if you used anything else on the carving, than what you normally do. I know your procedure for the hair was different but all else seesm that way too. At any rate its a great carving. A happy Easter to you and your family fred k

  8. I just realized when I looked at "Sgt. Buffalo" ...he resembles Bill Cosby.. I carved a rough out one time and every one thought he looked like Walter Matthau....LOL
Life's strange but fun just the same.. Happy Easter to all.

  9. Yep, I see Walter Matthau. It is the nose and the shape of the mouth.

Lynn, another triumph...a caricature, but one that is "respectful", not degrading.
