Weary Willie

Here's my contribution to the "Silent Auction" portion of the Artistry in Wood show in Dayton, Ohio beginning on November 8.  The Dayton group use this event to raise money for their charities and group.  This years theme was characters related to a Circus.   My first thought when thinking about the Big Top was the clown character created by Emmet Kelly.  I can certainly remember him growing up.  Anyway, I hope it sells for a nice sum so the Dayton club can benefit from it.   Hope you like it too.  You might even want to see if they take phone in bids!!

  1. I really like your more unusual carvings Lynn, this one reminds me a little of your carving" the undertaker" and that one is still one of my favourite carvings of yours! Wish you still had that one in your carvings for sale section!!! Weary Willie ranks right up there with him, I love the colouring. Keep up the good work. Trev

  2. This was a real surprise when I saw it. It is absolutely wonderful. It should raise a pretty penny in deed. Ginny

  7. My brother in FL has been a circus enthusiast since we were kids and has quite an extensive collection of circus memorabilia (from books, posters & programs to Red Skelton paintings and artifacts from several Ringling Bros. performers). Emmet Kelly was an idle of sorts for him and he always dressed up like him for Halloween (or any other costume party) as Weary Willie. You can bet I'll be bidding on this fantastic carving at Dayton as it would be the topper of his collection.

  8. I remember him too, and you have made an excellent bust of him. So very well crafted it is sure to bring a bundle for the charities. Outstanding job.

  9. Truly awesome carving. I like when you venture out of the western theme. You could carve a toothpick and I can imagine it would be a Materpiece.

  10. Lynn, excuse the delay in posting. This is an EXCELLENT caricature of Emmett Kelly. My mother was an oil painter and did many potraits of him for family, friends, and commissions. Bravo.
