Viking Warrior – Part 1

I’m going to move away from Cowboys & Indians for a bit and try something new.  Judy and I watched “How To Train Your Dragon”  and I was impressed with the various figures in the movie.  So, I thought I’d take you along from the initial sketch to, hopefully, the finished figure.   Should be fun and we’ll see if we can try some new tricks to make the project that much more interesting.  I hope you’ll follow along and create your own version.

  1. I LOVE IT!!!! I absolutly love it. This should be as much fun as it is legal to have, I am pumped up and ready to go. I like to do a wide variety of subjects, and have wanted to do/thought about doing a Viking for a while...you have read my mind and I thank you for it. Looking forward with great anticipation to the next installment..thanks to you and Judy.

  2. WOWSERS! This is going to another Great Video Series!!! I can hardly wait.

It is very helpful to me to see you start at the sketch. I am looking forward to learning how you convert from a sketch to a pattern.

Do you already know what parts of the figure you will carve from separate pieces of wood? Do you work that out as you are sketching or does that come later? Would you mind sharing with us how you make those determinations, including you considerations for strength, grain direction, or ‘posing’ the figure? I suspect you make other considerations I can’t even imagine…

Thanks to you for your generous gift of time in producing and editing these videos. Please thank Judy for her great patience in videotaping all of this for us!

  4. Lynn,
I ordered this movie for the sole purpose of carving the Vikings! I use to sculpt 28mm fantasy figures for a number of years out of kneadatite putty so when I saw them I thought I have to try these guys in wood. Then I saw that you were doing this for the next project and I thought no way! Thanks for the side step from your normal projects. Lets just think of them as outlaws on boats!
Thanks for all you share with us.

  5. This is going to be another really great carve. I heard you say that vikings might use spears. I always thought of them as using hatchets, axes and big swords. Whatever you come up with will be great.

  6. Like everyone else I'm looking forward to carving this next figure. When I watched the vedio and your drawing I looked at my miniture schnauzer, Hans ( who need a hair cut) and realized He sort of looks like your drawing..So I have a study I can look at when carving the Viking!!!LOL Good luck carving everyone!!!
    Cheers, Mary Anne
