The Horse Soldier

Still trying to flesh out my display at Dayton I was flipping through my reference notebooks and came across a couple photos of John Wayne in his uniform from the movie The Horse Soldiers. Wow! That would make a great carving, especially as a bust. So here it is prior to heading over to the paint table.

It should be a pretty colorful carving with the dark blue shirt and hat, the yellow bandana and the gold shoulder insignia and braid on the hat. I made the braid out of twisted wire. In the photo it has been sprayed with primer.

One thing you will note is the dark color of the wood used for the head. This head has been around for a couple years waiting for just the right figure to put it on. I think I carved it from a piece of basswood that didn't come from my Heineke source. I painted it this afternoon and it looks fine.

Should have the finished article up tomorrow or the next day. As always your comments are welcome and appreciated. More photos in the gallery.

  1. Very cool, I like the eyes, kinda squinty like the Duke's. Nice brim on the hat too.

  2. Talk about a great carving. Top notch from that beautiful hat all the way to the base. That hat is just #1. The neckerchief is perfect for that carving. Very-very clean top to bottom. No better show at the movies then what we get right here. Sure looking forward to seeing this one hopefully at Dayton. Thanks for showing Lynn……Myron

  4. When I saw this on WCI I thought hey, that looks like the Duke. Now I see you intended it to resemble him. Awesome!

  6. i always marvel at the detail you see and then put into your carvings-- its always there -- its just that most of us dont see it, or are unwilling to go to the trouble to include it. congratulations on another fine carving, tho i wouldnt have expect less.

  8. Another masterpiece for us to study in amazement Lynn. Thanks very much. At risk of showing my ignorance here, can you share with us the details about "Dayton"? I assume that is a big show but is there some way the rest of us can follow you there on-line? Do you take a group photo of all your pieces before riding off to the show? Thanks very much. The videos are simply priceless and an enormously gracious gesture of your (and your wife's) time. Thanks so much!

  9. TomG: Quite a few years ago I bumped into a couple of members from the Dayton group and was invited to be the Featured Woodcarving at their annual show. I had participated in quite a few shows prior to that but was literally amazed by the size and quality of that show. It's moved since then.......into a building large enough to be an aircraft hanger. Perhaps it is as its located at the Dayton airport. If a person wanted to see the best of woodcarving in the U.S. this is the show I would recommend. Sure, there are other shows but this show allows the viewer to converse with an extremely large group of top notch carvers and to examine their carvings closeup. I wish there was an internet connection there then I could live-blog the show...unfortunately there isnt. I will try to photograph some of it and post it here.

  10. Thanks for the info Lynn. That's super! I guess I could have checked out the link you have posted already so sorry about that. I noticed they have "Sad Day to a Bad Year" featured on the site. Looks like a lot of talented artists will be there and you are right at the top.
