I painted the flag design this morning and put everything together so here he is, ready to jump in his ship and go off to rape and pillage somewhere. Sure hope it's not around here.

This has really been a fun project but I'm glad it's over. Doing these carvings via the video process really stretches out the production time of a piece and by the time it's half done I'm just about ready to move on to something else. But I know you folks like those videos so we'll keep them coming. I've already got an idea for the next series which should be even more interesting and a lot more challenging.

The symbol on the flag is one I found on the web and I think it really rounds out the character. Once everything was mounted I gave him and the flag a quick shot of Dul-Coat to even everything up.

So, if you're making your own version I hope you share it with the rest of us. Maybe we can put them all together and go over and attack that WCI forum and create a little havoc. Again, your comments are welcome and appreciated.
Lynn, definately another winner. The multiple colors and dry brushing techniques that you used really make this fella stand out. I will have to give some of your brush techniques a try. Thanks to you both for all the time you invest in doing the videos for all of us.

An ancient warrior to fear and flee from...he eats small childern for breakfast and grown men for lunch. A savage with a heart, or at least with an interesting pose and great visual appeal. He will set off the collection of the lucky person who buys him, that is certain. Was really fun to see him evolve from a sketch to a finished figure, and thanks for dragging us along for the journey. I, for one, learned some things and was inspired by some other aspects...will definatly have to start one of my own. He can be a serf or minion to your guy, as he won't be anywhere near the quality of this guy...but hey, every village has at least one idiot and I propose to carve him. Thanks again for the excellent series.
ReplyDeleteFantastic! I'm inspired to give one of these a try.
ReplyDeleteJust in time for Father's Day...
ReplyDeletethanks Lynn that was a real treat
He looks better that I thought. Then again all your carvings turn out that way. Better than I can image.
Someday Id like to see you carve something without having to stop to explain everthing to us, without having to comment as you go. Simply see how you attack piece of wood...:)
Happy Fathers Day
Thank you and thanks to Judy as well for such an inspiring piece. It is testament to your art and your leadership that you share so willingly.
ReplyDeleteMay I keep a copy of the finished piece with my copies of the videos? Do you consider the pictures of the finished pieces created during your tutorials to be part of the lessons or part of your reserved art?
Thanks again for your help in improving my own skills!!!

Mary Anne
P.S. It will be a week or so before I'm finished...
Just returned to carving recently. Still a beginner. I can't tell you what it means to be able to watch and learn with your videos. So helpful and motivating. Love your viking. Trying to imagine the female counterpart of this hearty gent. Many thanks to you and Lynn for sharing your expertise.
ReplyDeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteWow...simply wow. You make it look so easy. Nice job. You really have a grasp on shape and form. The viking would normally not be a subject I am particuarily interested in, but your comical style and mastery of detail makes it a fantastic carving worthy of a top shelf in anyones collection. Well done.
