Rise & Shine Boys!

As I mentioned a couple posts back, I was going to try a 3/4 bust. The reason I wanted to do this is because I like to always push the envelope a little by coming up with new or different ways to present a figure. Another reason is to lessen the price of a figure and this certainly should do that. I found it was really amazing how much more quickly I could complete this piece compared to the time it would have taken to do the whole body. I think once the name plate is in place it should make a nice presentation. So.....I'd really like your impressions and thoughts about doing a figure this way. Be honest.....I'm not looking for atta-boys!

The theme of this piece is that it's just before sunrise and one of the cook's responsibilities is to roust the wranglers for the days work. He's got the biscuits baked and the coffee is hot so it's time to stop dreaming about that new filly down at the saloon. So get your butt out of the bedroll and your tack squared away.......we've got cows to move!

Comments please .... more photos in the album!

  1. Lynn, I think it looks fantastic. I did a 3/4 bust of a dwarf not too long ago and liked it better than a full body figure. I think I can say the same here. Nicely done. By the way, did you make that lantern or buy it somewhere? It's terrific.

  2. Lynn, I think that is a good idea trying to bring the price of your carving down by not doing a full figure but to me this just looks kind of odd. What about turning a hardwood dowell and mounting it on that fixed to a small base? Maybe that would look the same as well.

  3. Lynn, you could carve this guy's jockstrap and place it on a wooden pedestal and it would be better than what most of us (at least I'm certain of myself) could do. I think this displays the exact same skills and talents as the rest and if it's 3/4 work than it ought to be 3/4 priced. Anyway, I'm just amazed at how fast you can turn these characters out. How long to carve this guy? And, same question as BrantantR above...how about the lantern?

  5. "Roustin' Wranglers" Should do quite well. I like the placement of his apron, takes the emphasis away from the stand. Nice job Dad!

  6. I like the busts you do so well that I have pushed the cowboy and horse project aside and doing my first bust. Great little camp cook bust here Lynn. I really like it......Myron (Just my opinion, I like your horse shoe base design the very best when it comes to mounting a bust). I realize it is good to change from time to time. This is a very special little carving here. Thanks Lynn

  7. Turned out very nice Lynn. Is that a pair of faded red long underwear under his rolled up long sleeve shirt?

  8. I suppose there is a market for "busts"..... but I prefer seeing your work in full length caricature form. If cost prohibitive is a factor to a buyer who prices your work, it has to be that everyone is watching their do-re-mi right now. Change can be good and if you can create & maintain a buying group of folks for a 3/4 bust carving.....then I say go fo it! But please, keep producing the full size length ones too as you are an icon of inspiration to alot of us carving folk who don't have the artistic ability to come up with the classic caricatures & scenes like you do.

  9. Lynn, I agree with Bob, IN -It's a new approach and for those looking for some thing different and less money it should work out. But I suspect the majority of buyers want the full deal. Something you might want to consider here is that, IMHO, the apron going down the front goes a long way in selling the image. That is, it gives the impression of a full body. Other subject matter not go as well due to clothing constraints. It will likey force you to become much more creative above the waste.

Hwy where did are posts wanting to know how to make the lantern go?

  10. Lynn,

I really enjoy all your work and you've been a great inspiration and educator to many of us in the carving community. Thanks.

3/4 bust....I like this one and it opens up a new artistic piece that a collector would want to "add" to his collection of full bodied pieces for sure. Having said that, I strongly believe that your available pieces should contain a balanced amount of 3/4 busts. I don't see it as I'll buy because its affordable, I see it as a definite "add-on" to my collection, which also means that, if I did buy this one first, because of limited funds at the time, then for sure I'm saving up for a second piece (full-body)to add to it. So I think it will work it a couple of positive ways for you.

Good luck, and thanks for bring this variety of artistic concepts to light for us.
