The carving part of this piece was finished up today with the installation of the mirror. Judy and I spent some time in the WalMart makeup section yesterday looking for a ladies compact that I could remove the mirror from to allow him to see his reflection. I think it's pretty clear that the barber must have been hard of hearing or, like all barbers when presented with a healthy head of hair, kind of went wild with the clippers. It will be fun painting this poor soul and also adding the hair clippings on the cape around his shoulders. It should be a pretty neat piece once completed.
Lots of photos in the Gallery and I'll look forward to your comments as I always do.
Super carving once again Lynn. And I've been in this guys situation. Said "just a little off the top" and ended up scalped every time! The reason for those stark shearings I learned was simple. Don't get the barber talking to you a lot. The more he gabs, the more he clips! Guess that's why I finally stopped going and haven't been to a Barber Shop (do they still have those?) since 1982!
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious. Love it. Looking forward to seeing it painted
ReplyDeleteMy Grandfather was a barber for aver 60 years, and I hung aroud the shop in the 50's when I was a lad. This carving brings back memories, and I really like him. I love the apron and all it's folds, looks just like the real thing, Very well carved. His face reminds me a touch of Will Rogers. A sure winner in this creation.
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that you are greatly expanding the scope of your work. As much as I like seeing cowboys and Indians doing what cowboy and Indians do, is it fun to see some of the other facets of life in the west old west.
ReplyDeleteFunny is good! Keep 'em coming!
Another great carving Lynn, a real fun piece that need no explanation you can see just what's happened! And the mirror is a great touch I've never seen before!! Can't wait to see him painted and am interested to see how you create the hair clippings!! Keep up the good work. Trev
ReplyDeleteNot sure if you found a mirror or not but you know when you go to the dentist and they look in your mouth with a tiny mirror. Well, go to the drug store and see if they have one. Hope this helps. BTW, I love this one. Can't wait to see him painted. Ginny
ReplyDeleteInteresting ear detail... Quiet different... I like
ReplyDeleteAs they say in the military... That's a "High and Tight" haircut.... :)
ReplyDeleteWell if that don't bring back haircut memories of those shipboard barbers. Lynn, another sure fire winner there!
ReplyDeleteAnother winner Lynn, great carving...how in the world did you cut that mirror so small?
