Hooray! We’ve finally arrived at the last post and the last video. To me it seems this project has lasted about a year…not that it took long to do the actual carving, painting and the filming but because it took so long to upload things to the web.

One thing I noted on this video is that I repeated part of the varnish section. That’s okay as that step is one of the most important in getting a great finish on your carving. Also, when I show how to make the eyes sparkle the video is kind of fuzzy as the camera couldn’t focus in close enough but I think it shows what I’m doing well enough for you to figure out the rest. Hey……I’m just learning this video business!

So, I think this first experiment on doing an instructional video turned out pretty well with only a few minor hiccups. It’s been fun making them so I’m sure there will be some future attractions down the trail. I certainly hope you’ve enjoyed following along and always look forward to your comments. I’ve put some still photos of Shifty in the Gallery. Until next time.
Lynn this has been just GREAT!
ReplyDeleteI have enjoyed each section and your camera lady did such a good job. This type of instruction is so much better than getting a step by step book and not being to see the 3rd demension. You should be real proud of the work.
You all do not stop now. Rest up and give us another one real soon partner.
And thanks.
Charlie
Awesome, thank you!!!

What is there left to say, just fantastic.I never heard anyone talk down boiled linseed oil, but I will try your technique the next time.Thank you so much. Maybe you could do a horse the next time, but whatever you do it will be good. Thanks again. fred
ReplyDeleteMany thanks Doughty family for your time and efforts to help us become better carvers. I have enjoyed each and every segment. I will thank you both in person at Dayton. See you, Anthony
ReplyDeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the entire project and to Judy for doing the camera work. A lot of questions got answered for me. I like Fred would like to see a horse and maybe some time a water feature.
Sure would like to see the finished piece, but can't make it to Dayton, maybe next year.
Looking forward to the next project, whatever it is...
Terry

Thank you Lynn and your wife.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great tutorial.I am using a utility knife for a lot of my carving now.
Doug
Lynn & Judy, thank you so much for taking me on this educational carving journey and sharing your knowledge. I have truly enjoyed every minute of it. Your techniques for adding character (no pun intended (-: ) to your carvings are simply amazing. You have helped me become a better carver and very enthusiastic about trying all of them in the future.
ReplyDeleteHope your trip and sales in Dayton are a great success.
Thanks so much -
Ron
Well Lynn,
ReplyDeleteI really like shifty. Having lived through every cut, chip and scrape of the carving of him and then every dip, brush stroke and dab of the painting of him; I sort of feel a certain ownership of him. In fact I am quite proud of him.
I have learned a lot from you via these videos. Sometimes my fingers are sore and so I tend to avoid knife work preferring the gouge, but you can’t do everything with the gouge.
It was good to share this time with you and your wife. Thank you both very much.
Michael.
Corsham.
Thank you. Thank You!! THANK YOU!!!
ReplyDeletePlease pass along our appreciation for the time your wife spent holding the camera as well.
I very much appreciate learning what you are sharing.
Looking forward to the next one~
Lynn & Judy, Thanks for the videos. I learned lots of things from them. I will be going back and watching them again. I plan on seeing yall at Dayton. Carl
ReplyDeleteare you going to have cd's of this adventure with you at dayton?if so how much thanks for all the work you and judy have done on this

Lynn,
ReplyDeleteWell, after this "episode" it looks like I have done my last "dry" painting. Doing it wet takes a task and (seemingly) makes it fun.
I know you're getting set for Dayton (I wish I could go) but when you get back PLEASE put these all together in a DVD. I can really only watch them at work -- the ol' home computer and DSL line make watching them there a bit of an ordeal -- and that's not such a good idea. On a DVD I'll be able to study them a little better.
Good luck at the show.
Note to all: Hopefully, once I get back from Dayton I can get a DVD on track. This is all new to me so I have to learn as I go. It might sound simple to just reproduce the videos onto a disk but believe me there's a lot more to it than that. One thing that I have to watch out for is that these new projects, i.e., DVDs, don't intrude on my own carving. I just won't let that happen.
