First and foremost I'd want it on a personal level...no timers to make sure everyone gets their share. To prevent that the group would be very limited...say no more than six. As the project would take several days to complete ... say 4 or 5...by the end of it you'd probably prefer seeing less of me than more.
-
Where? Why at the Out West Institute of Carving Excellence! I have a teriffic shop with all the tools anyone would need to do just about any project. And as we would be doing a lot more than just whittling on someone's roughout those tools would be nessary. And when I say project I mean from raw wood to a gallery quality piece. Figure developement, layout, carving, painting, scene setting and mounting...we'd do it all. And as I'm a complete control freak I'd be on you constantly to make sure you don't wander off the true path as I see it. One thing I would not do is carve your figure for you. You would be expected to keep up with the group. Naturally, this type of instruction would be aimed at the more experienced carver.
-
The charge? Nothing..Zero...Zip...Nada!! As I'd be in the shop anyway your company and friendship would be payment enough. Judy and I are far from starving so we don't need your money. You would be required to bring your carving tools, carving glove & thumb protection , wood, pyro-burner, chair and paint brushes. I'd furnish the shop tools to cut the blank, glue any attachments, paint and varnish. We'd all be using the same paint colors so we'd use mine to ensure the same end result. I would also require you to sign a liability waiver. Oh....free coffee too!

We live just a few miles south of Grove, Oklahoma in one of the prettiest areas of the state. There is no shortage of local accomodations from motels to cabins. I'd try and schedule it off-season to cut the costs as much as possible. Good places to eat, a Casino about every half-mile, and theres great places to visit in almost every direction from our driveway entrance.
-
One more thing and this is important. A lot of carvers think my tools, techniques and methods border on blasphemy. Personally I care not one iota about such narrow-minded views. My methods might be off the norm a bit but they produce great carvings of high quality on a consistant basis that are in demand. While some might express objections with my ways of doing something you'll still see them shopping at my table. I'll willingly show you how I do things I just want you to willingly accept them as long as you're on the ranch.

So let me know what you think about this idea.
This sounds great.

Greetings Lynn,
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazingly kind and wonderful jesture, not to mention a huge surprise! Thanks a bunch. I'll have to give this a bit of thought before giving input. Casinos every half mile eh? Have to leave my wife at home for sure. (-:
hey lynn
ReplyDeleteI have been hoping that one day you would have a class to teach your technique of carving caricatures. I, for one, would like to have that opportunity to learn from you. Thanks for considering this.

Lynn,
ReplyDeleteA "Dude Ranch" for woodcarvers, sounds like a fantastic idea. Let's see since I'm a yankee from NJ, who grew up in the city, and for the past 42 years have lived down south in the Florida swamp, I definitely will fit into that catagory. I'm all for it!!!!. Now a little more on the serious side; I've been a fan of yours for some time now and love your style and your carvings. I would be very interested in attending your classes. Even if you decide to charge for them count me in. As far as for your tools, you talked me into trying an old reliable and I now find it one of my most used tools.
Thanks for considering this,

PS Let me know if you need my mailing address and e-mail address.
Lynn,
ReplyDeleteWish I was more experienced. I would jump at the opportunity to to learn hands on with you. The format sounds like a real winner.

Lynn, this is a wonderful wonderful idea and generous on the part of you and your wife for people willing and able to travel to your place. But I'm a home body and only take short day trips and would ask you to consider doing some DVD's along with these opportunities for us who just can't make it that far.

Wow, I'd almost quit my job for an opportunity like that. Alas, there are over 1,300 miles between us and 10 mouths to feed under my roof, so I guess I'll just have to keep dreaming. What a great idea though.
ReplyDeletelynn,
ReplyDeletesign me up, since like you i am recovering from some bad karma, but will be fit to travel sometime,

Lynn
ReplyDeleteI am a beginner and would love to have a lesson from the Master, but at this time I would be wasting your time. So I truly hope you do this and in a few years allow me to attend a lesson. In the mean time if you need a video camera guy let me know, I can hold one of those to make DVD,s and do some editing.

SIGN ME UP!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI would even bring Santiago along. He said - long time no see. HaHa.
Now the waiting begins. Hurry up already....LOL.
Terry
P. S. The wrist must be improving & that's great.
Lynn, been out of town working the last few days and just saw this post. What an incredibly generous gesture. It looks like you have way more than the six or so you asked for already but if any spots open up, please consider me along with the rest. The opportunity to visit you all would be priceless just to walk around the museum. But to actually soak up instruction and know-how from you would be a dream for all of us. So, I'm in too. Thanks so much.

Lynn Sign me up just torn my house down Got my comptor going sign me up please turn the list up side down that way mybe i would be first Thank you John Smith Anchorage Alaska
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn, This sounds like a great opportunity, but I don't know if I am advanced enough to keep up - I'd sure like to try. As I'm still a working stiff, advanced notice of what dates you're thinking of would make planning easier.
ReplyDeleteI regards to your methods/techniques being blasphemous - far from it. Bird carvers use non wooden pieces in their carvings (eyes & feet) as well as their "habitat" all the time. They even carve heads & wings to attach. Review caricature carving books & articles and many carve heads, arms & legs separately and then attach them.
Your ART is outstanding - those who think you are cheating, don't have a leg to stand on.
Hi lynn, What a great idea and a generous offer. I see you have more the the six you need and if this idea comes alive I would love to attend a future session. 4-5 days of carving with other carvers who could ask for more? Since I am still in NYC I could bring the bagels to go with the coffee.
ReplyDeleteMHarnett
This would be a wonderful opportunity. For ideas why not steal an idea from the CCA. Decide on a theme/scene that has multiple components that everyone could contribute to. I could envision a scene of a round up with cowboys who may have had a long nite and too much to drink the nite before or a group of cowboys defending a camp from an Indian attack behind a cook wagon. I can see a group of carvers (notice I didn't say guys) who meet early in the day on a cold fall morning over hot cups of coffee and "we" begin on a long day of carving and sharing. Lots of photos for the entire process to record for the memories of the attendees and to show those not fortunate enough to attend. I would certainly save time on my vacation calander for such an opportunity.
ReplyDeleteI was looking at your website and saw the miner and thought of a new scene for the carving project. A whole scene aroung some miners panning for gold with pans, rockers, sleus boxes, and tough guys standing guard. Great fun.
ReplyDeleteLynn that sounds great I would love to do it ?
ReplyDeleteLynn, I would love to do it...I think it would be a great chance to learn and enjoy your work up close.
ReplyDeletebelprime
Lynn,
ReplyDeleteI would love to visit with you again in Jay and to be able to carve along side of you would be fantastic. I haven't been able to carve much for the last few months, since we moved from Albuquerque to Burnet, TX. We're slightly closer to Jay now, so sign me up!
GeorgeS
I have plenty of vacation and Jay isn't that far from Kansas City. Put my name in the pot.

Is there still an opening in your class??????????Please!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteLooks like you've opened up a can of worms with your offer to conduct a seminar and have plenty of carvers standing in line already......including myself, eager to attend. This announcement gives us a great opportunity to learn from you and for that I say thank you. Many of us have already taken advantage of your instructive web-site and can now look forward to the chance to be able to personally work with you.
ReplyDeletePerhaps when this first seminar is given, you'll make the offer again as an Annual or Semi-Annual event, in which case we all would get a chance to participate.
Duane Wegley here: I would love to attend a class at your shop. We travel in an RV, I can be there most anytime. Let me know when.
ReplyDeleteHey Lynn, it has been a couple of weeks since you posted this, I was just wondering how's your healing/recovery going?
ReplyDeleteDeb
Me too.
ReplyDeleteTerry
What an opportunity!! And how cool to do it just to be doin' it. Vic N
ReplyDeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteI think it's a grand idea, and the price is just right. I'm having back surgery on Monday, Aug 10th, but later on this year I think I would be healed enough to give it a whirl. Haven't been in a class since Claude Bolton a few years ago before he passed.
