To the left is the template I used to make the base for this project. I used a piece of 1" Oak for the larger base, a piece of 1/2" Basswood for the second level and finally a piece of 1/8" panel for the top. The wide area between the Oak and Basswood pieces is large enough for a nice routed edge incorporating an attached Brass nameplate. It's little details like these that make your carvings really look sharp. If you want to use a nameplate you can find one online at
www.signsbygwynn.com. I used their A-30 size brass plate for this one. The title of the piece will be in Double-line Block and my name in Script. You can just fill out the order on line or give them a call. They'll get it to you cheaper and a lot quicker than you can get it locally. Tell them I sent you.

The attached photos show the whole process of making the base and locking in the wheel. In the next part we'll start working on the figure.

Good luck! Lots of photos in the Gallery.
Lynn,I'm really liking these tutorials, the bad part is I'm in south texas for the winter and won"t be able to carve it untile May. Thanks for taking the time to show us how to do it. Are we gonna see how you make those fantastic six shooters on this one?
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comment. No six shooters on this one. Going to keep it very simple as we're working in a smaller scale. South Texas? I thought all that blew away?
ReplyDeleteLynn,
ReplyDeleteJust a question about the wheel, in the painted picture's there is 2 dot's by each spoke ,what is it ? Just wondering.
Thank's,
Tristan
Another fantastic tutorial!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Lynn for sharing all your techniques for free! You are certianly my kind of carver! Love the quick wagon wheel too.
Thanks a bunch, we all really apreciate you!
Hi Lynn, The post above says it all!!! Thanks again, Craig
ReplyDeleteHELLO LYNN:
ReplyDeleteLike part two (2) and all the commets and info. that go with it. Thanks for the info. on nameplates. The ones that I use are brown enamel over brass,so when they are engraved the lettering comes out brass, which shows up better and easer to read.
As always,"YOU MAKE MY DAY".
