Pancho-Part 3, Detail Platforms

We've roughed out the shape of the head and with this post we'll create the platforms for the final details. To me this is the most important step in the process of creating a nice looking carving. Like most carvers I love to do the details. However, I've learned over time that you have to have a good foundation in place or things will just not work out the way they should.

So, take your time, plan your steps and check your reflection in the mirror occasionally to see that the shapes you're carving actually reflect the shapes of a face.

Lots of photos in the Gallery.

  1. Lynn, is this the same sketch you used on prior versions of Pancho or is it new? Somehow it looks different to me.

Not only are you are great carver and instructor you are a wonderful artist as well.

In the detailing part please include some tips on the wood burning process, which really makes the finished carving come alive. IMHO

  2. Ron...Thanks for your comment. That sketch was made while I was watching TV. I keep a small sketchbook next to the recliner and when I see something I make a quick drawing. It's not really meant to be an exact pattern to follow...just something to give me an idea of which direction to go. As for the burning, I'll make sure there are lots of photos as I do that part of the process.

One more thing, I have to carve a new Pancho to show how I burn and paint as the one shown was sold long ago. Not to worry though as those processes are pretty generic to any carving.

  3. Lynn I am a member of the WCI message board and I visit you blog quite often I notice that you are using a standard utility knife is there a reason? Or is it just what you are comfortable with? Anyway I love your stlye of carving and hope to be as good as you. I live in Ohio and I will be attending the Dayton Carving Show I hope to see you there and meet you!

  5. Hi Lynn, a small request. If it's not to much of problem could you take the photos about 50% closer so that when I enlarge the posted picture I can see more of the detail? In some photos it is hard to tell the depth and angle of your cuts. Thanks in advance -
