Granny Gets A Tattoo - Finished!

Finally!!! This thing has really been a chore to finish. The carving part was easy compared to the shop front and all that lettering. Ever tried to letter backwards on a piece of clear Lexan? I don't recommend it!

I think it's a nice little scene...an unusual one. It's not so funny as it is cute so I'll bet the older ladies will like it. It's still missing a few things which are bouncing around inside my noggin but I haven't decided whether to add them. One is a little snow to carry the theme of Granny's overcoat and earmuffs. Wouldn't take much, just a little along the edge of the building and fire hydrant. I think the big window could also use at least one more sign but, to put it frankly, I'm a little burnt out lettering. My eyes aren't what they're used to and that small work is really taxing. When I finally decide what to do I'll post some photos of the additions.

  1. Hi Lynn -

Another great job, as usual. You are a very creative person!

A thought, shouldn't the curb in front of the fire hydrant be red and not yellow. Yellow is loading zone. IMHO

Always see your work as great eye candy.

  2. Lynn, Granny is quite a "head turner" in that your carving tells so many good stories as do so many of your carving creations. The yellow curb works for me for that is the way they paint curbs in front of fire hydrants here in OHIO. I noticed you carved lettering into the yellow curb, but the angle of the photo did not allow me to read what you carved, but what ever it is, I am confident is it right down to the accurate detail. Your artistic interpretation is right on target, THANKS, Don Mertz

  3. Ron.....I'm in your debt for pointing out that glaring mistake. I really appreciate it as I pride myself in getting things right. I've been out here in the country too long and I guess I forgot that little detail of city life!! Thanks again.

  4. Don....thanks for the comments. They're appreciated. As you can see I change the Fire Zone markings as I googled them and thats what the California code states. The lettering says "FIRE ZONE".

  5. Nice job Lynn,
I used to reverse paint lexan NASCAR slotcar bodies, it is a challenge to backward letter. You did it very well.

An idea for your store window, a moving sale sign for 1300Pennsylvania Ave. ;)

    Nice job, well done!

  6. Lynn ,

This is one of your best works. I really admire the work that you put into your pieces, and this one is exceptional.

You could have named it "Once in a Blue Moon" Really a great piece !

  10. Master Carver Lynn,

    I am just blown away!

What do you use for the lettering? A brush? A Sharpie pen? Something else? If it is a brush, where to you get something that tiny?

  11. Can't say much more than has been said. A nice change from your usuals. If you ever notice old people do wear coats in not so cold weather but snow would enhance your piece just a little farther. Great carving.

  13. Lynn Doughty,
Thank you for publishing your work at the internet! I really enjoy visiting your site. Your work is fantastic! I carve wooden marionettes myself, and your site is an inspiration for me. There is so much to study on your well documented work, so I keep coming back :-)
