"Joshua Deets" - First Look

What a great subject to carve! The book Lonesome Dove and it's associated TV series is loaded with material and characters so rich in detail that just saying their names gives me a whiff of cattle herds and trail dust. I thought it would be neat to try and carve some of them and I can't think of a better one to start with than Joshua Deets.

In this piece I tried to capture all of his significant features. I decided to give him chaps as he does wear them in the series and I will still be able to show the quilted material that his pants were made of. He will be holding a lasso in the empty hand so it should make a pretty striking figure. Also, it's kind of large, standing about 16" not counting the base.

Hope you like him. Lots of photos in the Gallery.

  1. Another great one, Lynn. Woodrow and Gus...now those guys will really offer up some thoughts for pieces.

You mentioned a painting about an Indian by a telegraph pole and I found one in a book on Remington , Russell and other western artists. The painting wasn't by Rem. or Rus. but it was in the book.

  2. Another great project. Specifically, which of the Lonesome Dove books are you refering too? I found one on Amazon that was a photographic essay, or sorts - Is that the one?

  3. A great project! The detail is unbelieveable! Thanks for taking us along on the ride. Additionally THANKS for suggesting a darker stained base under my "May I Have This Dance" scene. I used your suggestion and it improved the carving a lot. Thanks Again!

  4. Lynn, I do not know how you can get any better at carving and ideas to carve but you continue to do it over and over again. Thank you for your unique Western Art. Also thank you for being so generous in sharing so much information here on your Blog and on WCI Message Board. Don Mertz
