Carving A Cowboy's Horse-Part 4-The Stirrups!

Now for some real fun!! You might think this next step is difficult but it's really not. It is time consuming so plan on spending about 6-8 hours because you want to take your time and get a good result. There are lots of photos in the Gallery with explanations for each step so you should have no trouble.

After we get this done we'll give that poor fella a tail so he can keep the flies away!

  2. Greatly appreciate another wonderful tutorial. It's like having a great instruction right inside my laptop.

I'm wondering how you keep your work so clean before you paint it? Do you bleach the carving or anything special just before you do the painting?

  3. Ron. I work in a clean enviroment and I wash my hands frequently. I also wash my carving glove occasionally. Once the piece is finished I use a flap-sander to smooth off the edges and give the piece a nice clean surface to paint. I would never use bleach as this would change the color of the wood to where I would have to adjust all my colors to compensate for it. While you cold wash it with soap I wouldn't recommend it as I doubt if you could ever completely remove the residue and I'm not sure how this would effect the paint.

  4. Hi Lynn. I'm new to wood carving...I was always interested but never had the time. Spent thirty years as a commercial artist and painter, now I'm completely absorbed by carving.
